profile

Ms. Charny has been practicing law since 1984 and is a partner with Charny, Charny & Karpousis, P.A. In addition to maintaining her own caseload, Judy manages the firm's Divorce and Family Law Group - a team of skilled attorneys she personally selected and trained to share her personalized, efficient and compassionate approach to the practice of law.

Over the years, Ms. Charny has represented women and men, young and old. She has advocated for clients who are stay-at-home parents, part- or full-time employees, executives, professionals and business owners. As an attorney, she has also represented domestic partners, unmarried parents and pre-nuptial relations. Her practice focuses on all areas of divorce and family law, such as matters involving custody and child support, alimony, equitable distribution, college tuition funding and domestic violence.

Prior to pursuing her own practice, Ms. Charny worked with the Camden County Prosecutor's Office for 5½ years, trying cases in major criminal trials and gaining extensive experience in the area of domestic violence. She recently resumed her role as a Municipal Prosecutor in Cherry Hill Township, a role she held from 1998-2008.

Ms. Charny is a Master in the Thomas S. Forkin Family Law Inns of Court and is on its Executive Committee. She is a Matrimonial Early Settlement Panelist in the Superior Court of New Jersey for both Camden and Burlington Counties, and serves on the District IV Ethics Committee of the Supreme Court of New Jersey. She is a member of the New Jersey State Bar, Camden County Bar and Burlington County Bar Associations.

Throughout her career as a lawyer, Ms. Charny has shown a commitment to continuing education - for herself, her team, other professionals and the community as a whole. She speaks on diverse topics that include the impact of divorce on business owners and professionals, child custody and change of circumstances affecting alimony and support.

One such example is the seminar she presented entitled "The Face of Grandparenting Today - Visitation rights and other legal issues." The audience included social workers, nursing home supervisors and assisted living administrators, who earned continuing education credits for their attendance. She also volunteers her time with the Samost Jewish Family & Children's Service of Southern New Jersey, providing complimentary consultations in the areas of domestic violence and family law.

In recognition of her expertise and commitment, Ms. Charny has been named to South Jersey Magazine's "Awesome Attorneys" and SJ Magazine's "Top Attorney" lists in every year since 2007. She has also appeared on Legal Line, "Fox & Friends" and CN8 "Your Morning." In 2008, Ms. Charny was inducted in the National Association of Professional & Executive Women's "Women of Excellence" Registry. Most recently, she was named the 2011 "Women's Advocate of the Year" by the South Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO®).

Ms. Charny resides in Cherry Hill, New Jersey with her husband and law partner, Richard Charny. They have three sons. The family is actively involved in community service, including fundraising for the American Cancer Society, Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Juvenile Diabetes, Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey and the Katz Jewish Community Center.
